Art Supplies Needed

Molly Marsh, our 5th grade art teacher, has asked that we gather some things for an upcoming art project the children will be doing. She needs the "stuff" by the first of September. Here is what she is requesting:

Magazines that can be cut up for type/fonts, old graph paper(the older the better!), old classified ads, not the whole paper!(again the older the better). . . Basically, I would need enough of this stuff for each fifth grader to have one piece @8.5" x 11"of each of these materials. When I mention the older the better, aged to the point of yellowing paper(s) is the effect I hope for! Obviously I do not need 250 magazines to show up in my room, but if each student had ONE old magazine they could cut up, it would help tremendously!

Thank you for any help with this endeavor!

August Genre - Realistic Fiction

Each month we study a different genre in class. We discuss the elements of the genre, usually read a book in the specific genre, and the students are assigned a project (book report, cereal box creation, character dress-up, poster, etc.). Students must read a book in the genre for that month and complete the assigned project before the last school day of that month. Most months will use books that can be quizzed on (AR quiz). Therefore, they must also quiz on the book before the end of the month. NO LATE WORK is accepted for the genre projects since students have about a month to complete the project. This genre project counts as 2 reading test grades (the project and AR test).

I encourage students to get started early in the month to check out a book, read it, and test on it. If they read a book and do poorly on the AR quiz, they should choose another book for that genre, read it, and test on it, as a poor AR quiz grade might hurt their overall reading grade. Sometimes, students don't make a good choice and decide to keep the poor AR test grade. I encourage them to read another book in the assigned genre, but I don't "make" them. It's up to them to be responsible and make good choices.

The genre for August is realistic fiction. These books are fiction, but the setting, plot, and characters seem real and could happen. The setting takes place in modern times (instead of in the past like historical times). Books included in this genre are Beverly Cleary books, some Louis Sachar books, Matt Christopher books, and Gary Paulsen books, to name a few. This month's project is fairly simple. Each student has been given a genre sheet to complete - it's like a book report. All sections should be completed and handwriting should be legible. Students receive ONE copy of the genre project.

The August genre project is due September 2 (since we didn't go to the library until this past Wednesday, August 17th). Each student checked out a realistic fiction book on Wednesday.
