Samaritan's Purse: Operation Christmas Child

Throughout the year, but especially at this time of year, it is important to think others, particularly those children who are less fortunate than we are. Therefore, our class has decided to participate in the Samaritan’s Purse, Operation Christmas Child. We are collecting items to fill shoe-box size boxes to send to children around the world who are in need. We have several boxes to fill by November 15th. Below is a list of “Gift Suggestions”:

School supplies: pens, pencils and sharpeners, crayons or markers, stamps and ink pad sets, writing pads or paper, solar calculators, coloring and picture books, etc.

Toys: small cars, balls, dolls, stuffed animals, kazoos, harmonicas, yo-yos, jump ropes, small Etch a Sketch toys that light up or make noise (with extra batteries), Slinky, etc.

Hygiene items: toothbrush, toothpaste, mild bar soap (in a plastic bag), comb, washcloth, etc.

Other: hard candy and lollipops, mints, gum, (please place all candy in a Ziploc bag), T-shirts, socks, ball caps, sunglasses, hair clips, toy jewelry, watches, flashlights (with extra batteries)

DO NOT INCLUDE: used or damaged items, war-related items, such as toy guns, knives, or military figures; chocolates or food; out of date candy, liquids or lotions; medications or vitamins; breakable items such as snowglobes or glass containers, aerosol cans

Participating in this opportunity is completely voluntary. We appreciate any help and support that you can give.

Thank you!

Holiday Info

We will be having our Santa's Workshop on November 22nd beginning after lunch! Can't wait! We will have so much fun!

Also, while you are out shopping during the next month, please note:

For Christmas we will have a party, but the students do not exchange gifts. Instead, I ask for parents to send in "stocking stuffer" type items for their Christmas bags. That way everyone gets similar items.

In the past, parents have sent in some of the items listed below (we have 26 students, but we might get a new student between now and then, so if possible send in an extra item). Right now we have 13 boys and 13 girls. Please send items to me by December 9th - label the bag/items "For Christmas Bags" - just so I will know what the items are for, as we will also be asking for Christmas party stuff at a little later date.

Stocking stuffer/bag suggestions:

lip balm/chapstick
Hot Wheel type cars
Barettes
Nail polish
Christmas candy (NO Peanuts/Nuts - No items manufactured in the same plant with any kind of nuts, please!)
pocket size kleenex, hand sanitizer
gloves/mittens
Christmas erasers, pencils
Christmas straws
Hand pencil sharpener
Gel pens
Crayons/colored pencils
Coloring/maze/puzzle books
Anything you think the kids might enjoy!

Thank you for your help!

Art Supplies Needed

Molly Marsh, our 5th grade art teacher, has asked that we gather some things for an upcoming art project the children will be doing. She needs the "stuff" by the first of September. Here is what she is requesting:

Magazines that can be cut up for type/fonts, old graph paper(the older the better!), old classified ads, not the whole paper!(again the older the better). . . Basically, I would need enough of this stuff for each fifth grader to have one piece @8.5" x 11"of each of these materials. When I mention the older the better, aged to the point of yellowing paper(s) is the effect I hope for! Obviously I do not need 250 magazines to show up in my room, but if each student had ONE old magazine they could cut up, it would help tremendously!

Thank you for any help with this endeavor!

August Genre - Realistic Fiction

Each month we study a different genre in class. We discuss the elements of the genre, usually read a book in the specific genre, and the students are assigned a project (book report, cereal box creation, character dress-up, poster, etc.). Students must read a book in the genre for that month and complete the assigned project before the last school day of that month. Most months will use books that can be quizzed on (AR quiz). Therefore, they must also quiz on the book before the end of the month. NO LATE WORK is accepted for the genre projects since students have about a month to complete the project. This genre project counts as 2 reading test grades (the project and AR test).

I encourage students to get started early in the month to check out a book, read it, and test on it. If they read a book and do poorly on the AR quiz, they should choose another book for that genre, read it, and test on it, as a poor AR quiz grade might hurt their overall reading grade. Sometimes, students don't make a good choice and decide to keep the poor AR test grade. I encourage them to read another book in the assigned genre, but I don't "make" them. It's up to them to be responsible and make good choices.

The genre for August is realistic fiction. These books are fiction, but the setting, plot, and characters seem real and could happen. The setting takes place in modern times (instead of in the past like historical times). Books included in this genre are Beverly Cleary books, some Louis Sachar books, Matt Christopher books, and Gary Paulsen books, to name a few. This month's project is fairly simple. Each student has been given a genre sheet to complete - it's like a book report. All sections should be completed and handwriting should be legible. Students receive ONE copy of the genre project.

The August genre project is due September 2 (since we didn't go to the library until this past Wednesday, August 17th). Each student checked out a realistic fiction book on Wednesday.

Welcome Back to School

I want to take a minute to say THANK YOU to all my wonderful students and parents for making our first two days of school an absolute success! We have the BEST class! The children are well mannered and seem to be hard workers. I can't wait to see all my kids on Monday! I hope everyone has a restful and fun weekend!

Welcome to the 2011-2012 School Year!

Dear new 5th grader and family,

Welcome to 5th grade! I’m excited to be working with you and look forward to a successful, positive year together. It’s going to be great! Feel free to email me this summer so that I can get to know you better and visit my class website (info below). UCES will host a drop-in Meet the Teacher on August 10th from 1:00 to 3:00. I’m in classroom #218, on the top floor of the building where the elementary lunchroom is. I can't wait to meet you and let you see our classroom before school begins on Thursday, August 11th.

Fifth grade is academically challenging yet full of rewards that come with responsibility. It is very important for students to maintain skills over the summer, especially multiplication tables (0-12). You'll definitely need to know them in 5th grade math. You can easily practice your math skills in the kitchen (measurement) and figuring out totals/making change while shopping. Plus there are lots of fun, free math websites (see mine for links).

Please continue to read and write over the summer. You can find lots of interesting books and magazines at the public library. I encourage you to write in a journal this summer. Entries could include places you go, things you do, etc. Continuing to read and write will help you maintain fluency in these areas.

I anticipate a successful 5th grade year full of growth and discovery, and I know you do, too. Please be sure to look over the attached suggested supply list. Students need to come to school prepared each day. Organization, responsibility, accountability, and hard work will lead to success.

I look forward to working closely with each of you. Research and past experience indicate that students are more successful when parents take an active role in their children's education. I’m counting on you. See you in August! Have a safe and happy summer.

Sincerely,

Ms. Traci Martin

(tmartin@ucschools.org)
